Contract content

The fathers of the bride and groom have agreed to amend the contract concluded on 11 November 1529 between Erich (II) and Agnes of Hesse to the effect that Erich (II) shall now marry Agnes’ younger sister Anna instead of Agnes; reason: Agnes is older than Erich (II), whereas Anna is the same age

The fathers attest that the marriage now planned shall remain in all respects in accordance with the provisions of the marriage contract of 1529; the change of bride shall not alter the content of the contract

The fathers’ councillors shall meet to discuss and determine the dowry, morning gift and everything else pertaining thereto

However, should the bride’s father come to the conclusion that his daughter Agnes should marry the groom after all, he shall notify this within one year by letter and seal in accordance with the provisions of the contract of 1529

If he does not respond within one year, Anna shall marry the groom on the same terms as Agnes would have done

In all other respects, the contract of 1529 shall remain in force.

Signed by Erich I and Philipp; sealed.

Commentary

The marriage did not take place.

After the death of his father, the groom’s mother tried to persuade him to convert to Lutheranism, but in 1547 he finally decided to remain Catholic.
