Contract content

[Pre] – expressing the desire to preserve and continue the long-standing friendship and love between the two countries, expressing the desire to unite the two kings and their magnates in peace, alliance and friendship: if possible through the procreation of joint princely offspring – courtship by Scottish negotiators, consent by the bride’s brother, bride’s mother and Danish regency councillors, negotiations and conclusion of contract expressed: to reaffirm the old alliance between both kings, as an eternal testimony of mutual obligation and goodwill (14f.)

1 – Courtship, consent for the bride, handing over of the bride announced: in accordance with Scottish power of attorney issued on 10 June 1589.

2 – Engagement and marriage announced: by the groom’s procurator, compliance assured by the groom

3 – Dowry determined: to cement love, peace and friendship between the kings and empires, with the consent of the bride’s mother and Danish regency councillors, as determined by the deceased bride’s father, payment regulated

4 – Widow’s property determined

5 – After the death of the groom: Bride granted the right to choose to move abroad or remain within three years; in the event of moving abroad, redemption of widow’s estate regulated

6 – In the event of the death of the bride or groom before the marriage: nullity of the contract regulated

7 – Freedom of religion guaranteed for the bride and her servants: with Danish or German preacher

8-9 – Compliance guaranteed

10 – Signatures of the bride’s brother, the bride’s mother, Danish regency councillors and Scottish negotiators announced
