[Preamble] – At the request of the groom’s brother to provide for the groom in a manner befitting his status, following the groom’s decision to enter into a second marriage, in view of the bride’s noble birth, and in light of the many alliances between the two crowns: Selection of the bride and courtship announced by the groom’s brother; marriage negotiations and conclusion of a preliminary contract announced with the Pope’s dispent —with the consent of the bride and groom: agreement on the marriage contract announced (45f.)

1 – Marriage agreed upon: according to the Catholic rite

2 – The bride’s transfer and trousseau arranged

3–4 – Marriage arranged by a procurator in Metz

5 – The bride’s transfer and the personal marriage ceremony arranged

6 – Dowry settled: in accordance with dynastic law, to be the bride’s property; the groom’s maintenance assets pledged as security against default; dowry regulated

7 – Bride’s renunciation of inheritance settled: regarding estates, paternal and maternal inheritances, excluding non-German estates and allodial estates of the Palatinate dynasty

8 – Community of property between the spouses regarding movable property and marital gains during the marriage agreed upon: personal property of the groom regulated

9 – Bridal jewels specified: use and inheritance following the death of the bride or groom without children regulated

10 – Widow’s income specified: payable from the dowry or the groom’s maintenance assets; the widow’s residence regulated

11–12 – Upon the death of the groom without surviving children: provisions regarding the dissolution or continuation of the community of property, the bride’s liability for debts, the bride’s personal property, and the widow’s support—Upon the death of the groom with surviving children: provisions regarding the bride’s share in the community of property

13 – Upon the bride’s death: Inheritance of the dowry and estate regulated

14 – Protection of the bride’s assets against alienation guaranteed

Commentary

Shortly before the wedding, the bride converted from the Reformed faith to Catholicism.
